PBS Hypes Smear on ‘Pop­u­lar Author­i­tar­i­an Move­ment With­in the Repub­li­can Par­ty’

Har­vard hates Repub­li­cans, and that makes them a nat­ur­al match for PBS. On Thursday’s edi­tion of the tax­pay­er-sup­port­ed PBS New­sHour, noto­ri­ous­ly lib­er­al cor­re­spon­dent Lau­ra Bar­ron-Lopez inter­viewed two Har­vard pro­fes­sors, Steven Lev­it­sky and Daniel Ziblatt, about their new anti-Repub­li­can tome, though of course couched in as an ele­vat­ed jere­mi­ad about “dan­gers to democ­ra­cy” sup­pos­ed­ly posed by the GOP.After admit­ting that America’s “sys­tem of checks and bal­ances” meant the Unit­ed States prob­a­bly wouldn’t become like an “autoc­ra­cy” like Hun­gary, Ziblatt went on a false­hood-rid­den rant.Yet after all the guff about the Repub­li­can threat to tra­di­tion­al gov­er­nance, Bar­ron-Lopez lets the authors explain why, in her words, the U.S. Con­sti­tu­tion “is part of the prob­lem, is part of what’s imper­il­ing democ­ra­cy.” So chuck the Con­sti­tu­tion in the name of pro­tect­ing Dem …
