The death last week of famed Wash­ing­ton super-lawyer Bob Ben­nett, 84, brought with it the jus­ti­fied praise for his abil­i­ty to rep­re­sent high-pro­file Repub­li­cans and for­mer Pres­i­dent Bill Clin­ton in the Mon­i­ca Lewin­sky case.
But he was also known among friends as a big-time fly fish­er­man.

He pre­ferred to fish in Mon­tana, where he got on the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mon­tana law school’s board of vis­i­tors so that he could vis­it, and fish, often. He cre­at­ed a pop­u­lar vis­it­ing speak­ers pro­gram, and one day, open­ing a con­fer­ence, he said, “I went up to intro­duce the speak­er, and there sit­ting in the audi­ence, I saw the young man who’d been our guide on the Smith Riv­er a few years before.”
