New York redis­trict­ing fight paused as Repub­li­cans win tem­po­rary vic­to­ry

New York’s Court of Appeals ruled on Tues­day that a con­gres­sion­al dis­trict map­ping com­mis­sion will not have to draw up new lines and the exist­ing dis­tricts will remain in place, at least for the time being.
The exist­ing con­gres­sion­al dis­tricts were drawn up by the court after maps pro­posed by Democ­rats were thrown out ahead of the 2022 midterm elec­tions. As a result, New York Repub­li­cans picked up sev­er­al sur­prise wins, and they were a key fac­tor in hand­ing con­trol of the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives back to the GOP.

The reject­ed dis­trict lines would have giv­en the New York Demo­c­ra­t­ic Par­ty a major advan­tage in 22 of 26 con­gres­sion­al dis­tricts, while the court-drawn map focused on cre­at­ing more com­pet­i­tive dis­tricts.
Democ­rats in the Empire State instead only won 15 dis­tricts in the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives with the new map and the Repub­li­cans flipped three dis­tricts red.
