Dianne Fein­stein dead at 90: Five-term sen­a­tor and old­est mem­ber of Con­gress dies

Sen. Dianne Fein­stein (D‑CA), the longest-tenured female sen­a­tor, has died, a source famil­iar with the mat­ter con­firmed to the Wash­ing­ton Exam­in­er. She was 90.
The longest-tenured female sen­a­tor broke many records with her lengthy and mon­u­men­tal polit­i­cal career. Fein­stein is the only woman to lead the Sen­ate Rules Com­mit­tee and the Intel­li­gence Com­mit­tee. The Cal­i­for­nia Demo­c­rat is also the only woman to have presided over a U.S. pres­i­den­tial inau­gu­ra­tion.

The for­mer San Fran­cis­co may­or head­ed to the Sen­ate in 1992 in a spe­cial elec­tion that made her one of Cal­i­for­ni­a’s first female sen­a­tors. She was reelect­ed five times, and received the most pop­u­lar votes in U.S. Sen­ate elec­tion his­to­ry in 2012, win­ning 7.75 mil­lion votes.
