Rep. Nan­cy Mace (R‑SC) donned a “scar­let let­ter” as she head­ed into a House speak­er can­di­date forum.
Mace wore a large red “A” on her shirt, which she said was her “scar­let let­ter.” This is in ref­er­ence to the famous nov­el by Nathaniel Hawthorne, set in Puri­tan Mass­a­chu­setts, in which the pro­tag­o­nist is forced to wear a scar­let let­ter “A,” for adul­tery, on her clothes after being charged with the prac­tice.
