White House con­firms Biden-Xi meet­ing in San Fran­cis­co

Pres­i­dent Joe Biden will be meet­ing with Xi Jin­ping in Novem­ber.
White House press sec­re­tary Karine Jean-Pierre con­firmed the meet­ing dur­ing Tues­day’s press brief­ing, say­ing the two will engage in diplo­mat­ic con­ver­sa­tions dur­ing a sum­mit in San Fran­cis­co.

“We have said we want to move for­ward with Chi­na,” Jean-Pierre said. “We under­stand that, and intense com­pe­ti­tion means intense diplo­ma­cy.”

There was some con­fu­sion as to whether the press sec­re­tary was con­firm­ing that the two would meet. She lat­er added, “I think I just con­firmed it.”
Biden will vis­it the West Coast on Nov. 14 for the Asia-Pacif­ic Eco­nom­ic Coop­er­a­tion Eco­nom­ic Lead­ers’ Week. There, he will meet with Xi in per­son amid ten­sions between the world’s two largest eco­nom­ic pow­ers.
Jean-Pierre stressed that talks between the U.S. and Chi­na are ongo­ing at low­er lev­els, point­ing to meet­ings with nation­al secu­ri­ty advis­er Jake Sul­li­van and Sec­re­tary of State Antony Blinken.
