Rep. Andy Kim launch­es Sen­ate cam­paign against indict­ed Bob Menen­dez

Rep. Andy Kim (D‑NJ) launched his cam­paign against Sen. Bob Menen­dez (D‑NJ) Fri­day.
Kim host­ed his first offi­cial cam­paign event at a brew­ery in South Jer­sey in front of some 250 sup­port­ers. Menen­dez was indict­ed in Sep­tem­ber on bribery charges in con­nec­tion with New Jer­sey busi­ness­men and the Egypt­ian gov­ern­ment. Kim was among the first to call on him to resign. The next day, Kim announced he would be run­ning against the sen­a­tor.

Menen­dez has plead­ed not guilty to all charges. While he has­n’t com­mit­ted to a reelec­tion bid, Menen­dez has refused to resign from his seat ear­ly.
“It doesn’t have to be this bro­ken pol­i­tics where you just have peo­ple putting their own per­son­al ambi­tion ahead of what’s good for this coun­try,” Kim said at the Fri­day event. “It’s about being a decent human being — a decent human being that treats oth­er peo­ple with respect.”
On his cam­paign web­site, Kim laments that 84% of New Jer­sey res­i­dents believe the state’s politi­cians are cor­rupt.
