President Joe Biden will travel to Baltimore next week, days after a containership crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse.
Biden told reporters who accompanied him to New York for this week’s fundraiser with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton that he would be in Baltimore “next week” with Gov. Wes Moore (D‑MD).
Biden has been previously criticized for not visiting other disaster sites quickly, including East Palestine, Ohio, after last year’s toxic train derailment.
But White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had previewed that he would go “when it is the appropriate time on the ground” so as not to “get in the way.”
Maryland will receive initial emergency relief of $60 million, but Jean-Pierre did not have any more details this week when asked when the administration will be making another supplemental funding request to Congress.
