Government can step in as campus antisemitism reaches ‘DEFCON 1’: Experts

Jew­ish stu­dents face an unprece­dent­ed uptick in cam­pus anti­semitism, and experts argue that uni­ver­si­ty response has been inad­e­quate to the point that gov­ern­ment action is not only per­mis­si­ble, but nec­es­sary.
The Wash­ing­ton Exam­in­er inter­viewed three lead­ing First Amend­ment lawyers and schol­ars after a recent poll revealed that Jew­ish stu­dents by and large feel unsafe on cam­pus, coin­cid­ing with a 400% rise in anti­se­mit­ic inci­dents, accord­ing to the Anti-Defama­tion League. They iden­ti­fied the line between pro­tect­ed speech and unpro­tect­ed con­duct, and how offend­ers and uni­ver­si­ties can be held account­able.
“Right now, we’re at a DEFCON 1 when it comes to anti­semitism,” First Amend­ment lawyer and civ­il lit­i­ga­tor Jef­frey Rob­bins told the Wash­ing­ton Exam­in­er.
