Jake LaTurner becomes 22nd House GOP member to not run for reelection

Rep. Jake LaTurn­er (R‑KS), one of the youngest House Repub­li­cans, is not run­ning for reelec­tion in 2024, join­ing the mass exo­dus of GOP mem­bers leav­ing Con­gress after a tumul­tuous year on Capi­tol Hill.
LaTurn­er, 36, announced his retire­ment from the House on Thurs­day. The Kansas con­gress­man is the 22nd House Repub­li­can to decide against run­ning for reelec­tion.
How­ev­er, unlike his fel­low GOP mem­ber Rep. Mike Gal­lagher (R‑WI), 40, LaTurn­er said he plans to serve out the remain­der of his term. Gal­lagher is set to retire ear­ly from Con­gress on Fri­day, how­ev­er, he may post­pone his res­ig­na­tion in order to attend a crit­i­cal vote series on for­eign aid this week­end.
In his state­ment, LaTurn­er called the cur­rent “dys­func­tion” on Capi­tol Hill “dis­tress­ing, but it almost always has been; we just didn’t see most of it.”
