Biden and AMLO vow they will ‘significantly reduce irregular border crossings’ from Mexico

Pres­i­dent Joe Biden and his Mex­i­can coun­ter­part, Pres­i­dent Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, have promised to reduce ille­gal cross­ings at the south­ern bor­der.
“The two lead­ers ordered their nation­al secu­ri­ty teams to work togeth­er to imme­di­ate­ly imple­ment con­crete mea­sures to sig­nif­i­cant­ly reduce irreg­u­lar bor­der cross­ings while pro­tect­ing human rights,” said a joint state­ment from the two lead­ers, who spoke by phone on Sun­day.
Ille­gal immi­gra­tion has hit new records dur­ing Biden’s pres­i­den­cy, and he’s hop­ing to reduce the num­ber of cross­ings ahead of a reelec­tion bid against for­mer Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump.
“The two lead­ers dis­cussed how to effec­tive­ly man­age hemi­spher­ic migra­tion, strength­en oper­a­tional effi­cien­cy on our shared bor­der, and there­by improve the secu­ri­ty and pros­per­i­ty of cit­i­zens of both coun­tries,” the state­ment not­ed.
