President Joe Biden and his Mexican counterpart, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, have promised to reduce illegal crossings at the southern border.
“The two leaders ordered their national security teams to work together to immediately implement concrete measures to significantly reduce irregular border crossings while protecting human rights,” said a joint statement from the two leaders, who spoke by phone on Sunday.
Illegal immigration has hit new records during Biden’s presidency, and he’s hoping to reduce the number of crossings ahead of a reelection bid against former President Donald Trump.
“The two leaders discussed how to effectively manage hemispheric migration, strengthen operational efficiency on our shared border, and thereby improve the security and prosperity of citizens of both countries,” the statement noted.
