Mur­phy says US has ‘no oblig­a­tion to write a blank check’ to Israel

Sen. Chris Mur­phy (D‑CT) pushed back on crit­i­cisms of Pres­i­dent Joe Biden‘s plan to lim­it cer­tain weapons ship­ments to Israel, argu­ing that the U.S. has “no oblig­a­tion” to hand a “blank check” to allies.
Mur­phy was asked specif­i­cal­ly about Sen. John Fetterman’s (D‑PA) cri­tique of Biden’s threats to Israel if they move for­ward with an oper­a­tion in Rafah. On CNN’s State of the Union on Sun­day, Mur­phy defend­ed the U.S. strat­e­gy.

 “We have no oblig­a­tion to write a blank check of mil­i­tary sup­port to any of our allies. We have a right, as a sov­er­eign nation with our own inde­pen­dent secu­ri­ty con­cerns, to make sure that, when we are part­ner­ing with an ally, that we are part­ner­ing with a win­ning strat­e­gy,” Mur­phy said.
