Biden threatens to veto House disapproval of Title IX transgender rule

Pres­i­dent Joe Biden has issued yet anoth­er veto threat against the GOP-con­trolled House, this time over his con­tro­ver­sial Title IX rewrite.
The House could vote as soon as Tues­day on H.J. Res. 165, a con­gres­sion­al dis­ap­proval of a new Depart­ment of Edu­ca­tion rule pro­hibit­ing dis­crim­i­na­tion of sex in edu­ca­tion pro­grams or activ­i­ties that receive fed­er­al assis­tance.
Cru­cial­ly, the Biden administration’s new rule bars schools from dis­crim­i­nat­ing against trans­gen­der stu­dents by chang­ing the def­i­n­i­tion of the word “sex” in Title IX to include gen­der iden­ti­ty. Repub­li­cans have railed against the rewrite since it was final­ized in April, and judges have blocked its imple­men­ta­tion in 14 states.
“The department’s rule is crit­i­cal to ensur­ing that no per­son expe­ri­ences sex dis­crim­i­na­tion at school,” the veto threat states. “Pas­sage of H.J. Res. 165 would elim­i­nate these crit­i­cal pro­tec­tions that keep stu­dents safe and able to real­ize their full poten­tial.”
