Mike Johnson berates Democrats after X post ‘mocking’ economic struggles

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R‑LA) lambasted House Democrats over an X post from Ways and Means Committee Democrats “mocking” economic troubles.

A post from the Democratic Ways and Means Committee account boasted about record online Black Friday spending, suggesting it debunked Republican concerns over the rising cost of living. Johnson took offense to the post, which was deleted, calling it “disgraceful.”

“Democrats deleted this tweet. Americans have been struggling for FOUR YEARS to afford basic necessities and House Democrats are mocking them. Talk about your all-time out of touch, disgraceful comments,” he said, adding that House Republicans would “deliver for hardworking Americans.”

The speaker included a screenshot of the offending post, which quoted an article about shoppers spending a record $10.8 billion online on Black Friday alone.

“And here we were thinking y’all couldn’t afford eggs!” the Ways and Means Democrats wrote.

The post was quickly deleted.

According to analysis from Adobe Analytics, this year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday saw record numbers, the Washington Post reported. However, spending was skewed toward the higher income brackets.

The outlet reported that those with six-figure incomes prioritized deals on luxury items such as Apple Watches, sneakers, and Dyson Airwraps, contributing heavily to the record numbers. Lower-income earners were much more reserved, prioritizing food and essentials.

This was reflected in the number of people who shopped online, which plunged by 7% compared to the year prior, the lowest the number has been since 2018, according to the National Retail Federation.
