Mas­sive Influx Of Trans­gen­der Refugees Is Caus­ing ‘Civ­il Emer­gency’ In Left­ist City

LGBTQ activists in Seat­tle believe a sharp influx of trans­gen­der young adults is caus­ing a civ­il emer­gency — and they want tax­pay­er help.

The Seat­tle LGBTQ Com­mis­sion asked May­or Katie Wil­son in a May 2026 let­ter to declare a civ­il emer­gency caused by a mass influx of “trans­gen­der and gen­der-non­con­form­ing” indi­vid­u­als relo­cat­ing to the city. The com­mis­sion has asked the city offi­cials to fund cash-strapped LGBTQ+ groups pro­vid­ing shel­ter and relo­ca­tion ser­vices to trans­gen­der refugees.

“Due to the rapid influx of 2SLGBTQIA+ per­sons seek­ing refuge in Seat­tle for increased safe­ty needs, civ­il rights pro­tec­tions, and access to essen­tial ser­vices the Seat­tle LGBTQ Com­mis­sion for­mal­ly rec­om­mends that City lead­ers declare a civ­il emer­gency that ensures an effec­tive and empa­thet­ic response to pro­tect­ing these inter­nal­ly dis­placed per­sons (IDPs) at a time of urgent cri­sis for our com­mu­ni­ty,” states the let­ter.

Trans­plants are com­ing to Seat­tle from red states such as Texas, Flori­da, Ten­nessee, Kansas, and Ida­ho “due to anti-trans leg­is­la­tion, threats to per­son­al safe­ty, and bar­ri­ers to health­care and legal recog­ni­tion,” accord­ing to the let­ter, which lists sev­er­al trans­gen­der-affirm­ing groups  “already respond­ing to this cri­sis.” The list­ed groups include Gen­der Jus­tice League, Seattle’s LGBTQ+ Cen­ter, and Trac­tion, a non­prof­it that helps “red state refugees” relo­cate to the Pacif­ic North­west through its Project Open Arms ini­tia­tive.
