Human trial near for male birth control pills

The University of Michigan is nearing human trials for its male birth control pills.

Professor Gunda Georg, the head of the University of Michigan’s Department of Medicinal Chemistry, reported that the pills are 99% effective and 100% reversible in mice. The pills have been researched for decades and do not affect hormones.

This new form of birth control temporarily limits sperm count in males to the point that they are infertile. It does so by blocking the protein that contributes to sperm production in the first place.

YourChoice Therapeutics has since licensed the pills and will be submitting a request to the Food and Drug Administration to begin a phase one safety trial with men by the end of this year.

“When you have restrictions on abortions and worries about forms of contraception, then, of course, the need goes up, and so I think this comes at the right time,” Georg said. “I think the interest in vasectomies also shows that men are going to be participating more than in the past, in helping with birth control.

“I can tell you, I get emails — even today I got an email from someone who wants to participate in the clinical trial, so there’s a lot of excitement around it,” she said.

Dr. Christian Hettinger, a urologist at Kansas City Urology Care, reported a 900% spike in interest in vasectomies earlier this month.
