WATCH: Rep. Salazar says Hispanics are done with Democrats ‘playing political football’

Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL) said a trend is beginning in which Hispanics are moving to the Republican Party after Democrats have played “political football” with them.

“We’re not Martians, we’re Americans,” Salazar told Fox News host Laura Ingraham Monday. “And this year is going to be, [2022’s] going to be the year of the Hispanic Republicans. Thank God for that! We’re waking up!”

“And why is that?” the congresswoman continued. “Because we have the same values that are entrenched in the Republican Party, God-fearing, law-abiding, tax-paying, low taxes, small government, and family oriented. That’s what we are. And thank God that we are waking up to the fact that for 30 years, the Democratic Party has been playing political football with us.”

Salazar noted that before serving in Congress, she worked in Spanish television, helping to found Univision and Telemundo.

“I know my community does not want open borders. We want to have an orderly border. We want to have low inflation. We want to be able to raise our kids, live in dignity,” Salazar said. “We want to live in the promised land and contribute with the economy. So it’s time for us to wake up and thank God we’re doing it. And the GOP is welcoming us, and I am the best example. In 2020, I was the biggest upset in the country because my people are not socialists.”

The congresswoman added that Democrats’ policies align with socialism.

“The whole Democratic Party,” Salazar said. “They have to defend the undefendable. They have to defend something called democratic socialism.”

Recent polling suggests that while half of Hispanic voters plan to continue voting for Democratic candidates, 28% say they will vote Republican, a significantly higher rate than the GOP has secured in elections past.
