Treasury Department to audit DeSantis spending on flying migrants to Martha’s Vineyard

The Treasury Department’s inspector general will audit Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s spending on immigrant flights to determine if there was an improper use of funds.

Deputy Inspector General Richard Delmar wrote in a letter to three senators and three representatives that the department will look into whether or not DeSantis used American Rescue Plan funds to fly approximately 50 illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, on Sept. 14.

IMMIGRANTS FLOWN TO MARTHA’S VINEYARD SUE DESANTIS

Documents show that, using funds from the federal State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, Florida lawmakers established a $12 million program focused on immigration.

“We will review the allowability of use of SLFRF funds related to immigration generally, and will specifically confirm whether interest earned on SLFRF funds was utilized by Florida related to immigration activities, and if so, what conditions and limitations apply to such use,” the letter read.

Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), one of the recipients of the letter, wrote a Twitter post praising the department for responding to “my letter.” He called the transportation cruel and said the immigrants were transported out of Texas and to Martha’s Vineyard based on “false pretenses and without any consideration for their personal dignity or basic needs.”
