Kamala Har­ris announces new over­sight for gov­ern­ment use of AI

Vice Pres­i­dent Kamala Har­ris has announced three new fed­er­al rules encour­ag­ing safe­ty and trans­paren­cy amid the rise of arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence.
The rules, intro­duced through the White House’s Office of Man­age­ment and Bud­get, strive to raise the stan­dards set to pro­tect rights and pub­lic safe­ty, in addi­tion to improv­ing trans­paren­cy and inter­nal over­sight, accord­ing to Har­ris.
“When gov­ern­ment agen­cies use AI tools, we will now require them to ver­i­fy that those tools do not endan­ger the rights and safe­ty of the Amer­i­can peo­ple,” Har­ris told reporters Wednes­day. “Pres­i­dent [Joe] Biden and I are requir­ing that every year, U.S. gov­ern­ment agen­cies pub­lish online a list of their AI sys­tems, an assess­ment of the risks those sys­tems might pose, and …
