Bill Cassidy says 2024 presidential race is a ‘sorry state of affairs’

Sen. Bill Cas­sidy (R‑LA) said on Sun­day that Pres­i­dent Joe Biden and for­mer Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump being their par­ties’ pre­sump­tive nom­i­nees shows that the coun­try is in “a sor­ry state of affairs” ahead of the Novem­ber elec­tion. 
Cas­sidy, who vot­ed to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 Capi­tol riot and has refused to endorse his bid to return to the White House, made the com­ments after being asked on NBC’s Meet the Press about the for­mer pres­i­dent recent­ly claim­ing that ille­gal immi­grants aren’t peo­ple. 
“The president’s rhetoric has reflect­ed poor­ly … regard­ing folks who are com­ing here ille­gal­ly, and they shouldn’t be, but in a dehu­man­iz­ing fash­ion,” the Louisiana sen­a­tor began. “And that’s why, again, many peo­ple con­tin­ue to have reser­va­tions.”
